Identifying Women and Birthing People at Risk
Recent MBRRACE reports and the Ockenden report demonstrated that women and birthing people with pre-existing conditions need to be cared for in a multi-disciplinary setting and that ‘never events’ are less likely where all those involved in a pregnant person's care during their pregnancy journey are engaged in creating a comprehensive care plan.
Birthing people are entitled to the best care available before, during and after pregnancy and should receive the same care – regardless of where they are cared for and with particular reference to their individual needs – equity and equality of care are paramount.
Access to Specialist Care
Within working hours Monday to Friday, we can arrange urgent MDT meetings within 24 hours for those that need care consideration. These would include obstetrics, obstetric physician, midwifery, anaesthetic and relevant specialist physician as required. For routine referrals we run specialty MDT meetings, as often as weekly, to ensure that detailed discussion takes place. For urgent out-of-hours considerations please contact the consultant on call via the Birmingham Women’s and Children’s switchboard.
Specialty MDT regional meetings hosted by the network include:
-
Renal
-
Hepatology
-
Cardiac
-
Haematology
-
General – for women and birthing people with multiple comorbidities or those who do not fit into specific specialities.
We can also convene MDT meetings for Oncology, Respiratory, Neurology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Endocrine and Gastrointestinal as required.
The Hub team are available to triage referrals Monday-Friday and will endeavour to reply to you with further information within three working days.
