What is Neonatal care?

Neonatal care is the type of care a baby receives in a neonatal unit if they are born early (premature) or are unwell. This is often unexpected.

1 in 7 babies are born needing to be cared for on a neonatal unit

Reasons for admission

Your baby may have a low birth weight, need support with breathing, feeding, or keeping warm, or may have a medical condition that requires treatment.

A stay in the Neonatal Unit

The Neonatal unit may feel overwhelming when you arrive. When your baby is admitted to the unit, staff should show you around and give you some information about the unit and neonatal care.

Created by the NICU Foundation and the South West Neonatal Network, this short animated guide to your role as a parent and what to expect once your baby has been admitted for neonatal care.

For more information about Neonatal Care go to the BLISS website to look at their guide.

Visit our Neonatal Units in the West Midlands page for more information. Here you will find details about each unit and have access to the 3D virtual tours so you can look around and access more information about neonatal care.
